A visit with ‘The Visitor’ star Richard Jenkins
Already this early in derby season, “The Visitor” is a key pony on the track. It’s been nominated for best picture by the Gotham Awards and will certainly pop up again at the critics’ kudos and Indie Spirits. It’s one of the year’s most celebrated little indies and could very well be a major player at the Oscars in two races: best actor (Richard Jenkins) and screenplay (Thomas McCarthy). (All six of the pundits we polled yesterday picked Jenkins as a best-actor nominee.) Also the Globes. Many members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., I hear, are very impressed by his perf.

So was the New York Times, which cheered his “quiet precision” as a widowed college professor named Walter who seems to have lost the will to carry on. Its review noted: “Mr. Jenkins, a durable character actor known to HBO subscribers as the spectral father on ‘Six Feet Under,’ plays his repressed, circumspect character with exquisite tact.”
